In recent years, Hvalfugl has made a name for itself on the Danish jazz scene as a new and original offering of some music, that is deeply rooted in all of us. Scandinavian jazz. Nordic folk jazz. Modern folk music. Many different terms have been used when describing music. With the new third album, it is clear that Whalebird exists in its very own universe. That
is instrumental music with lyrical melodies in atmospheric moods. It is playful and at the same time solemn, beautiful and melancholy.
New album “Like A Parachute”
In the autumn of 2018, the three friends who together form the Aarhus trio Whalebird, took up a studio in the north of England to record and work with the music for their second full-length album. The album is called "Like a Parachute", and it describes the feeling of throwing oneself into free fall, with the risk of crashing to the ground, only to feel the parachute unfold, and carry one hovering through the air. For the three friends in Whalebird, the music is their parachute, and it can probably best be described as soothing and captivating. Between the cheerful and mournful themes, Whalebird stretches its parachute, letting the listener soar freely in a timeless melancholy....

Between the cheerful and mournful themes, Whalebird stretches its parachute, letting the listener soar freely in a timeless melancholy.
Hvalfugl has previously released one album “By” and one EP “En Dag I Oktober”, both of which have received a lot of attention from both Danish and foreign media. They have created a unique common soundscape with double bass, electric guitar, piano and harmonium. It is the sound of traditional roots mixed with Nordic jazz from the early ECM days. Hvalfugl himself believes that the distinctive sound comes from a mixture of old Nordic music tradition, as well as inspiration from many modern music types such as jazz, folk, world and pop.
